Eyes
My heartbeat was all I could hear. It was so loud that it was drowning out the low snarls and grunts quickly fading behind me. So loud that I forgot it was even there for a moment.
My second mistake.
My first mistake would have been exploring these woods in the first place. Sure, I've heard the rumors of the creature. And the disappearances. But I didn't listen.
I never listen.
... WHY DIDNT I LISTEN??
... Oh well. It's too late to chastise myself now.
I slowed to a complete stop. I didn't hear it anymore. The Thing. It must have gotten bored with the chase... But of course, I was wrong. I looked around, all I could see were trees at first but then, I saw them. The eyes. Those beady, glowing eyes.
The fear that I felt when I first saw them washed over me again. The feeling consumed me, and I fell to my knees.
I knew this was the end.
I did the only logical thing I could think of at the moment. I put my hands together, and I simply prayed. But as I did, the Thing just smiled...
And it started laughing... Harder and harder.
It crept out into the light and exposed it's whole body.
"... Finally." I thought. "At least I can put a body to those terrifying eyes before I die."
The Thing was grotesque to say the least. It had human-like features, but it definitely WASN'T human. It walked on its hands and feet like an animal. It was bald, except for a few stray strands of hair on its head. And its fingers...
It looked as if the Thing crudely attached long blades to them...
They were caked in blood as with its face and chest. But the most alarming, the most terrifying feature this thing possessed, was its eyes. They were black rimmed, yellow and beady. And they just stared... I couldn't look away. I just stared back.
I barely noticed it creeping closer to me, with a wild grin on its face, still chuckling.
When it reached me, it took my hands, still in prayer, and leaned in close to me.
"... Your god cannot help you here... He has abandoned you." It said, cackling.
